Meet the team
Justin Solms – Founder, CEO, CIO
Justin Solms is the Founder, Chief Investment Officer, and Principal System Architect at Index Solutions. With a Master’s degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Stellenbosch, his early work in dual Kalman filtering laid the groundwork for a lifetime at the intersection of engineering, finance, and computation.
Justin began his career designing mission-critical systems for the aerospace and defence industries, where he developed inertial navigation systems and real-time AI algorithms for radar and weapon guidance. In the late 1990s, he brought this precision mindset into quantitative finance, helping build one of South Africa’s first quantitative investment firms.
In 2013, he launched Index Solutions — not just as a business, but as a personal engineering challenge: to build a fully automated investment management platform from the ground up. He remains hands-on as CIO and system architect, personally responsible for the firm’s optimization engines, backtesting frameworks, and operational pipelines.
What sets Justin apart is not just technical expertise, but a unifying philosophy: engineering as craft, software as system, finance as model. He draws deeply from control theory, system identification, and machine learning to design solutions that are clear, resilient, and antifragile.
Outside of finance, Justin is a curious mind drawn to the edges of consciousness, computation, and complexity. He’s as likely to be prototyping a model as pondering the philosophical underpinnings of awareness. A dedicated father and lover of nature, he finds renewal in South Africa’s wilderness and insight in silence.
He doesn’t just manage systems — he inhabits them.
Mark Baisley – Director
Mark has a Bachelor of Accounting and was appointed to the Index Solutions board in 2017. Marks current role is of Managing Director of Automated Outsourcing Services Propriety Limited (AOS) who is also the major shareholder of Index Solutions. Mark joined AOS in 1999 holding various positions such as Operations and Finance Director prior to becoming its Managing Director in 2011. Mark also serves on the board AOS’s Nominee Company and its Mauritian subsidiary Nabla and is a Key Individual of AOS.
Lance Solms – director
Lance is a seasoned professional in the South African financial services industry, with over 20 years of experience where he honed his skills in investment management and financial planning. He is a member of the prestigious Institute of Directors, which recognizes his expertise in corporate governance and leadership. In addition, he holds the institute’s advanced certificate for directors, which is a testament to his knowledge and expertise in the field. With a background in marketing and advertising, Lance brings a unique perspective to his work in the financial industry.
Lance Morel – Director
Lance is dynamic and accomplished Executive IT Leader with over 25+ years of global experience in financial services. Known for his strategic and entrepreneurial approach, he has driven success across start-ups and established organisations alike. Lance has held multiple board positions from Executive Director, Non-Executive Director, and Non-Executive Chairman, and in his capacity fulfilled positions such as Chief Information Officer, Chief Risk Officer, IT Director, and Advisory / Management Consultant. His proven board-level expertise and track record of delivering impactful technology-driven solutions have consistently driven innovative business and digital transformations.
